Reflection

From my past experience working on interactive projects in museum exhibitions, I often design for a wide range of museum visitors. This has made me wonder how I can make my designs more universal and intuitive. And i found that in many cases, when i encounter interactive experiences and games, language is often the first barrier I face. We use language to communicate with others, build up narratives, and define game rules. But at the same time, it creates friction to the experience. This led me to my first research question: how does non-verbal communication function? Building on that, I want to explore how the body senses and communicates beyond language.

Through the instruction sets I developed as my primary research, I found that under non-verbal restrictions, people tend to rely heavily on body language to express themselves and interact. This observation made me curious about the commonalities and differences in how different people use body language to communicate, which I believe is an interesting aspect to explore. On the other hand, I started my secondary research on Wittgenstein’s concept of language games to better understand how language works. Wittgenstein believes that language is just like games, it does not function based on a singular, absolute “essence.” Instead, its meaning and usage are rooted in the diverse ways that how people live, act, and interact. So i came out with these descriptions of language: language is not something fixed, it's an activity, it's collective, public and all about context. Based on that, i personally think that we can also see non-verbal communication in a same way, as a fluid and organic language.

Building on these explorations, I developed my concept statement: I aim to create artwork that explores how people communicate through body movements, reflecting the fluid and organic nature of language. One of the key questions I am considering for my final project is: How can I make people feel "free" from linguistic structures by experiencing the fluidity and organic nature of non-verbal communication? Additionally, reflecting on my midterm feedback, I believe it would be beneficial to look into academic research on body language, particularly studies that focus on cultural differences in non-verbal communication. This could help me further develop my ideas, create a collection/library/taxonomy of non-verbal in 3D visualizations and present a more compelling way for people to engage with a body movement database.
